A Million Neural Connections and Limitless Possibilities

LinkedIn Science & Technology

Written in 2024. Archived as part of my body of work.

Little minds absorb the world around them with an unmatched openness. It is so fascinating to watch a child’s eyes light up when they discover something new. It’s curiosity at its purest, unfiltered, and boundless.

Harvard University did a study that said 90% of a child’s brain develops, as in the neural connections, by age 5. Neural connections are formed at a rate of 1 million per second, creating the infrastructure for future learning.** That’s right—90%. Think about it**.

A million neural connections are created every second. Every single second!

Think about what that means. When children are stacking blocks, they’re not just playing—they’re testing out how the balance works. Understanding how the basics of engineering work and problem-solving without even realizing it. When they clap along to a song, they’re laying the groundwork for their brains to grasp how rhythm, memory, and language work. The beauty of biology is that these seemingly simple moments are actually building the pathways that will one day lead to amazing structural innovation and mesmerizing music that moves our very souls.

And yet, it feels like we’re not fully leveraging this incredible growth window.

We focus so much on academics later in life, but by the time formal schooling begins, we’ve already missed the prime opportunity to nurture creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

But here’s something that often makes me pause: What if we flipped the script?

What if early education wasn’t just about preparing children for school but about fueling their curiosity and igniting a lifelong love of learning? We talk about lifelong learners, and learning is never-ending. But have we truly worked on giving the kids the tools they need to be such?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. How do we ensure that every child—not just some—has access to an environment where their natural instincts to explore, build, and question are celebrated and amplified?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but I believe the conversation starts here.

What do you think? Are we doing enough to make the most of these critical early years? Or is there a better way? Let’s talk. 👇
